The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), established in 1936, is a Deemed University operating under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and supported by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Recognized as a Grade I University by NAAC (2024), TISS has four campuses including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Tuljapur. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. programs focusing on socially relevant interdisciplinary areas of applied Social Sciences.

The School of Habitat Studies specifically addresses knowledge needs in the habitat sector, drawing from interdisciplinary fields like habitat studies, governance, economics, environmental science, and management to develop professional capacities through its four centers: Centre for Urban Policy and Governance, Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, Centre for Regulatory Policy and Governance, and Centre for Water Policy, Regulation and Governance.
