Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), under the Government of India since 1956, is one of India's leading medical institutions. Spread across a 195-acre campus in Puducherry, it is recognized as an "Institution of National Importance" by an Act of Parliament (2008) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi. JIPMER is empowered to award medical degrees and offers Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Super Specialty Medical Training through its over 2000-bed hospital, providing courses like M.B.B.S., B.Sc., M.Sc., MPH, M.D., M.S., M.D.S, DM, MCh, and Full-time PhD Programs.
JIPMER also has a campus in Karaikal, established in the academic session 2016-17. Located about 150 km south of Puducherry, the Karaikal campus offers MBBS training with 61 seats, equipped with smart classrooms and telemedicine facilities linked to the main Puducherry campus. It features modern student practical and research laboratories, and is slated for expansion with a multi-speciality hospital and a new college campus.
