Candidates must possess a Ph.D. with a first-class or equivalent in the preceding degree within an appropriate branch, maintaining a very good academic record throughout. Specific departmental requirements also mandate relevant Bachelor's or integrated Master's degrees:
- General: Ph.D. in an appropriate branch.
- For many Engineering/Science Departments: A 4-year Bachelor's degree or a 5-year integrated Master's degree in the specific field (e.g., Biotechnology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Energy Engineering).
- Alternative qualifications (depending on department): 4-year Bachelor's in Agricultural/Pharmaceutical Sciences, MBBS, BVSC, 5-year integrated M.Tech./MS, or a 3-year B.Sc./B.S. followed by a 2-year Master's.
- For Design: 4-year Bachelor's or 2/5-year Master's in Design, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Management, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Physiology.
- For Health Sciences and Technology: MBBS or relevant Master's in Life/Biomedical Science.
