- For M.E. or M. Tech. holders: An equivalent degree in Materials Science, Thermal, Ceramics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline, with at least 60% marks or first class. A GATE qualification is mandatory, but a valid GATE score is not strictly required.
- For Bachelor's degree holders: A four-year bachelor's degree OR a five-year integrated degree in Mechanical Engineering or Ceramics Engineering, with a first division from an awarding Institute/University, AND a valid GATE score. Candidates without a valid GATE score in this category may still apply for the JRF interview, but PhD program registration will require GATE qualification.
