- For Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: A minimum of 10 years of practice in Criminal Law.
- For Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: A minimum of 7 years of practice in Criminal Law.
- For Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel: 0 to 3 years of practice in criminal law.
- All applicants must possess an Enrolment Certificate issued by the Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961.
Candidates for all counsel posts are required to have excellent oral and written communication skills, a thorough understanding of criminal law, strong grasp of ethical duties of a defense counsel, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently with others. Knowledge of computer systems is preferable for Chief Counsel, and excellent writing and research skills are vital for Assistant Counsel.
