About Indian Institute of Remote Sensing

The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a Unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a premier institute dedicated to capacity building and research in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geoinformatics. IIRS pursues a multi-disciplinary and problem-oriented research agenda focused on developing land-ocean-atmosphere applications and understanding Earth's surface and subsurface processes through space-based technologies. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must hold a M.E. / M.Tech / M.Sc (Engg.) or equivalent post graduate degree in First Class with an aggregate minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI grading of 6.5 on a 10 point scale. Alternatively, an M.Sc in First Class with an aggregate minimum of 65% average of all Semesters or 6.84 CGPA/CPI on a 10 point scale is acceptable.
  • Applicants must have qualified through National Eligibility Tests such as CSIR – UGC – NET (including for lectureship/Assistant Professorship), GATE, or other national-level examinations conducted by Central Government Departments and their agencies/institutions.
  • Specific essential qualifications for each Junior Research Fellow (JRF) project vary and generally include Master's degrees (M.Sc/M.Tech/M.E./M.Arch/M.Plan or equivalent) in relevant specialized fields such as Water Resources Engineering, Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing & GIS, Geology, Geophysics, Earth Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, IT, Architecture & Planning, Heritage Science & Technology, Agricultural Meteorology, Plant Physiology, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Forestry, Ecology, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Climatology, Botany, Wildlife Sciences, and Biodiversity & Conservation. Some positions may require specific specializations, dissertations, or a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Remote Sensing and GIS with relevant Bachelor's level subjects.

Age Limit Details

The maximum age limit is 28 years as of the application deadline (2025-12-14). Age relaxations are applicable as per Government of India orders: 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC-NCL candidates. Relaxations are also applicable for Ex-Servicemen, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Widows, Divorced Women, and Women judicially separated from their husbands who are not remarried.

Salary & Pay Scale

Fellowship Stipend for Junior Research Fellows (JRF) will be Rs. 37,000 per month initially, with a possibility of increasing to Rs. 42,000 per month upon designation as Senior Research Fellow (SRF). HRA at prescribed rates will be paid if hostel accommodation is not provided. Medical benefits for self will be admissible as per existing rules. Dearness Allowance (DA) will not be paid. The fellowship amount will be considered as Basic Pay for this purpose.

  • Applications must be submitted online through the ISRO website www.iirs.gov.in.
  • The online registration portal will be active from 10:00 hours on 2025-11-21 to 17:30 hours on 2025-12-14.
  • Upon successful online registration, applicants will receive an online Registration Number, which should be preserved for future reference.
  • Applicants must provide a correct and compulsory e-mail ID in the online application, as interview call letters will be sent via e-mail only.
  • Candidates are advised to regularly check their e-mail and the IIRS website for updates. IIRS/ISRO will not be responsible for any communication failure due to technical or other reasons.
  • Mandatory documents to upload in soft copies include a recent colored passport-size photograph (JPEG, less than 500 KB, plain/white background, full frontal view, no selfies, no black & white photos) and signature.
  • Marksheet of each semester/year with final pass certificate of essential qualification (single PDF, not exceeding 500 KB) must be attached.
  • Valid Caste/Tribe Certificate, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) Certificate, Discharge certificate (if required) must be uploaded in the prescribed format (file size less than 500 KB) as given on the IIRS website.
  • All original certificates, mark sheets, and proof of educational qualification, experience, age, and NET/GATE score card must be produced at the time of interview along with self-attested photocopies.
  • Only Indian Nationals are eligible to apply.
