  • For Geophysicist Group 'A' & Scientist 'B' (Geophysics) Group 'A': M.Sc. in Physics/Applied Physics/Geophysics or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics)/M.Sc (Applied Geophysics)/M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics)/M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a recognized University.
  • For Chemist Group 'A' & Scientist 'B' (Chemical): M.Sc. in Chemistry/Applied Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry from a recognized University.
  • For Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology) Group 'A' & Assistant (Hydrogeologist) Group 'B': Master's degree in Geology/Applied Geology/Marine Geology/Hydrogeology from a recognized University.

Age Limit & Relaxations

  • SC/ST: Upto 5 years relaxation.
  • OBC: Upto 3 years relaxation.

  • Ex-Servicemen: Upto 5 years relaxation (for those with 5 years military service as on 01-01-2027).

Syllabus & Exam Pattern Overview

What is the examination structure? Mode of test, total marks, duration, and negative marking rules.

The Combined Geo-Scientist Examination consists of three successive stages:

  • Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) - 400 Marks
  • Stage-II: Main Examination (Conventional/Descriptive Type) - 600 Marks
  • Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview - 200 Marks

Stage-I (Preliminary) Examination:

  • Paper-I: General Studies (common for all streams) - 100 Marks.
  • Paper-II: Stream-specific (Geology/Hydrogeology, Geophysics, or Chemistry) - 300 Marks.

There is a penalty of one-third (0.33) of the marks for each wrong answer in the Objective Type (Preliminary) papers.

Stage-II (Main) Examination:

This stage comprises three conventional type papers for each stream, to be answered in English, and is of M.Sc. degree standard. Key subjects covered include:

  • Geology: Physical Geology, Structural Geology, Mineralogy, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Sedimentology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy, Economic Geology, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Isotope Geology.
  • Geophysics: Solid Earth Geophysics, Mathematical Methods in Geophysics, Electromagnetism, Geophysical Prospecting, Remote Sensing and Thermodynamics, Nuclear Physics and Radiometry, Radiometric and Airborne Geophysics, Marine Geophysics, Geophysical Signal Processing, Borehole Geophysics.
  • Chemistry: Chemical Periodicity, Chemical Bonding and Structure, Acids and Bases, Theoretical basis of Quantitative Inorganic Analysis, Kinetic Theory and the Gaseous State, Chemical Thermodynamics and Chemical Equilibrium, Solutions of Non-Electrolytes, Electrochemistry, Basic Organic Chemistry, Stereochemistry, Types of Organic Reactions, Inorganic Solids, Coordination Compounds, Nuclear Chemistry, Chemistry of d- and f-block elements.

Candidates qualifying in Stage-II will be summoned for the Personality Test.

Candidates must apply online through the Union Public Service Commission's website https://upsconline.nic.in. The application process involves:

  • Creating an account.
  • Obtaining a Universal Registration Number (URN).
  • Filling out the Common Application Form (CAF) and an Examination Specific Module (which includes fee payment and center selection).
  • Uploading requisite information and supporting documents (e.g., date of birth, educational qualification, category certificates).
  • Capturing a live photograph and uploading a scanned signature as per the instructions available on the Commission's website.
