Educational Qualification

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Law (LL.B.) from a recognized university. For Deputy Registrar: Officers holding analogous posts on regular basis in Central/State Government, courts, or tribunals, or with 5 years regular service in Pay Level 11 (Grade Pay Rs. 6600). For Assistant Registrar: Officers holding analogous posts or with 5 years regular service in Level 9 (Grade Pay Rs. 5400), 6 years in Level 8 (Grade Pay Rs. 4800), 7 years in Level 7 (Grade Pay Rs. 4600), or 10 years in Level 6 (Grade Pay Rs. 4200).

Age Limit & Relaxations

The maximum age limit for appointment by deputation shall not exceed 56 years as on the closing date of receipt of applications (16.11.2026).

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, for the effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources. Registrars play a pivotal judicial administration role, heading the registry of the Principal Bench in New Delhi or Zonal Benches (Chennai, Bhopal, Pune). Duties include scrutinizing original applications, appeals, and review petitions under environmental statutes, listing matters before judicial and expert members, executing tribunal orders, managing court staff, and coordinating with statutory bodies (CPCB, SPCBs, MoEF&CC). The work environment is judicial, procedural, and demanding with strict compliance to tribunal timelines.

Appointments are purely on deputation basis, ordinarily for a period of 3 years as per standard DoPT guidelines (OM No. 6/8/2009-Estt.(Pay-II) dated 17.06.2010). Postings are specifically designated: Deputy Registrar at Chennai (Southern Zonal Bench) or Bhopal (Central Zonal Bench), and Assistant Registrar at Pune (Western Zonal Bench), subject to administrative requirements and transfers across tribunal benches.

Because appointments are made on deputation from feeder judicial services, central/state civil services, courts, or tribunals, deputationists do not enter the direct promotional line of NGT cadre. Officers retain their lien and seniority in their parent departments while drawing Grade Pay / Level in Pay Matrix under deputation rules or electing to draw parent cadre pay plus deputation allowance.
