Work Culture & Environment

Office/fieldwork balance, duties, organizational environment.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial (BAM) Hospital in Byculla is Central Railway's apex tertiary care referral hospital. Senior Residents in General Surgery and Orthopedics handle intense patient caseloads across trauma emergencies, inpatient wards, major/minor OT lists, night on-call shifts, and disaster relief duties for railway accidents. Private practice is strictly prohibited. The environment offers rich surgical and clinical exposure, working under senior Railway Health Service consultants.

Posting & Transfer Policy

Initial posting criteria, zone preferences, transfer liability.

Base posting is at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Central Railway, Byculla, Mumbai - 400027. The engagement contract is for one year, renewable annually up to a maximum permissible residency tenure of three years subject to performance. Senior Residents must reside in official railway quarters (subject to availability) and remain on call 24/7 for emergency railway duties.

Career & Promotion Ladder

Promotion timeline, seniority ladder, pay grade scaling.

This is a contractual residency scheme governed by Railway Board guidelines and does not lead to absorption, regularization, or permanent cadre seniority in the Indian Railway Health Service (IRHS). However, completing Senior Residency in a premier zonal referral hospital fulfills NMC/MCI clinical criteria and provides high-value credentials for specialist consultant appointments and faculty eligibility across medical colleges.
Crucial Application Warnings & Eligibility Traps
