Selection will be conducted in terms of Railway Board letter No. E(NG)I/2017/PM 1/11 dated 23.05.2019 (RBE No. 79/2019). The process consists of an objective Computer Based Test (CBT) written examination of 75 marks and a Classroom Lecture Trial of 25 marks (Total: 100 marks). Minimum qualifying mark is 60%. There is negative marking of 1/3rd mark for each wrong answer in the written test. Selected candidates will be placed on a merit panel for posting at ZRTI Muzaffarpur.

As an Instructor (P-Way), the officer transitions from strenuous field inspection to an academic and instructional environment. Duties include preparing lecture modules, delivering classroom and field demonstration sessions on track maintenance, IRPWM provisions, LWR/CWR regulations, and track machine operations, conducting examinations, and evaluating trainee officers. The work environment offers regular campus hours (9:30 AM to 5:30 PM), gazetted holidays, and an academic routine free from emergency track call-outs and monsoon night foot-patrolling.
