Work Culture & Environment

Office/fieldwork balance, duties, organizational environment.

Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan is an Institution of National Importance and a unitary residential Central University established by the Visva-Bharati Act, 1951, founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Academic operations are decentralized into specialized Bhavanas (Kala Bhavana for fine arts, Sangit Bhavana for music and performing arts, Siksha Bhavana for sciences, Vidya Bhavana for humanities, Bhasha Bhavana for languages, and Palli Siksha Bhavana for agricultural sciences). The institutional ethos blends classical cultural heritage and Tagore's open-learning pedagogy with modern university teaching and research standards. Faculty engage in classroom teaching, studio/practical mentorship, curriculum development, and doctoral research guidance. Standard working hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with institutional cultural programs and academic seminars periodically scheduled on weekends.

Posting & Transfer Policy

Initial posting criteria, zone preferences, transfer liability.

Permanent Central University faculty appointment under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Selected candidates are governed by the National Pension System (NPS), unless specifically permitted under the GPF-cum-Gratuity Scheme as per GOI/UGC orders regarding past service. Under Clause 15 of the advertisement and the Visva-Bharati Act 1951, appointed faculty members are mandated to reside within the territorial jurisdiction of the University in Santiniketan/Sriniketan, Birbhum District, West Bengal. Central university faculty posts are cadre-specific to Visva-Bharati and non-transferable across other institutions.

Career & Promotion Ladder

Promotion timeline, seniority ladder, pay grade scaling.

Career advancement is governed strictly by the UGC Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) Regulations. Promotion to Assistant Professor Selection Grade (Academic Level 12, Entry Pay ₹79,800) occurs after 5 years in Level 11 upon completing mandatory refresher/FIP courses. Progression to Associate Professor (Academic Level 13A, Entry Pay ₹1,31,400) requires a Ph.D., 3 years in Level 12, and verified research score publications. Further advancement leads to Professor (Academic Level 14, Entry Pay ₹1,44,200) and Senior Professor (Academic Level 15).
