Work Culture & Environment

Office/fieldwork balance, duties, organizational environment.

Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) at Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad, is DRDO's premier laboratory specializing in the design and development of advanced structural materials, armor ceramics, superalloys, titanium alloys, and refractory composites for strategic defense systems. Fellows work directly in state-of-the-art research bays alongside senior defense scientists on active projects. The work culture is intellectually demanding and research-intensive, offering access to high-end characterization infrastructure such as SEM, TEM, XRD, and hot isostatic pressing systems.

Posting & Transfer Policy

Initial posting criteria, zone preferences, transfer liability.

Posting is situated exclusively at DMRL, Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad (Telangana). The fellowship tenure is temporary for an initial period of 2 years, extendable up to a total of 4 years upon favorable Internal Screening Committee evaluation. Fellows can register for a part-time Ph.D. with recognized universities during the fellowship tenure upon approval from Director, DMRL. The fellowship carries no claim for absorption into DRDO.

Career & Promotion Ladder

Promotion timeline, seniority ladder, pay grade scaling.

Progression is evaluated internally: Junior Research Fellow (JRF, ₹37,000/month + HRA) for the first 2 years → elevated to Senior Research Fellow (SRF, ₹42,000/month + HRA) for subsequent years after satisfactory performance appraisal. Fellows gain extensive defense R&D exposure, publications, and are well-positioned to apply for direct Scientist 'B' openings through DRDO RAC.
Crucial Application Warnings & Eligibility Traps

Avoid common application rejection triggers, photo/signature guidelines, and certificate validity windows.

  • Dual-File Email Requirement: Applicants must attach exactly two files to their email—the completed Excel sheet and a single concatenated PDF containing all supporting documents. Applications without the Excel form or with fragmented attachments will be rejected.
  • Mandatory File Naming Protocol: The name of the Excel sheet and the PDF document must start with the post Sl. No. followed by the candidate's name (e.g., '2Srinivas' for Mechanical Engineering). Omitting this format may lead to shortlisting omission.
  • Valid GATE / NET Score Prerequisite: B.E./B.Tech. and M.Sc. candidates must hold an active, valid GATE or NET score in the relevant discipline as on the interview date. Candidates possessing M.E./M.Tech. with first class are eligible on degree merit.
  • Degree Awarded Status Only: Only candidates who have already been awarded their final degree or provisional certificate are eligible. Candidates awaiting results are ineligible.
  • Bar on Prior DRDO Fellows: Candidates who have previously served as JRF in any DRDO laboratory or center are strictly ineligible to apply again.
