Educational Qualification

Ph.D. in English Literature, Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, or related fields in the Humanities. Candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis are also eligible (must submit provisional certificate within six months). Candidates who completed Ph.D. from IISER Bhopal are not eligible to apply. Requires strong research track record in English and capacity for literary/cultural analysis.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IISER Bhopal is an interdisciplinary academic department within an Institute of National Importance (INI). The Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow (IPDF) engages in high-impact research within focus areas such as Postcolonial South Asian literatures, Environmental/Blue Humanities, Medical Humanities, and Partition literature. Fellows design and execute independent research projects, publish in top-tier peer-reviewed humanities journals (Scopus/UGC-CARE indexed), present at national/international conferences, and assist faculty in undergraduate/postgraduate course teaching, conducting tutorials, and mentoring BS-MS students. Fellows enjoy access to premier digital archives, central library facilities, and high-speed research networks in a vibrant campus environment in Bhauri, Bhopal.

Posting & Transfer Policy

The fellowship is purely temporary and contractual initially for one year, extendable for a second year subject to annual research progress review and satisfactory performance evaluation by the faculty committee. The position is stationed at IISER Bhopal campus (Bhauri, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh). The fellowship does not confer any right to permanent absorption or regular faculty appointment at IISER Bhopal. Institutional rules prohibit IISER Bhopal's own Ph.D. graduates from applying for these IPDF positions to encourage external academic diversity.

Post-doctoral fellows who successfully complete their 1 to 2 year IPDF tenure establish strong competitive credentials (teaching experience, independent publications, and grant writing track records) for regular Assistant Professor (Grade-II / Level 10 or Grade-I / Level 12) positions in IITs, IISERs, NITs, Central Universities, and premier international research universities.

  • Mandatory Medical Insurance: IPDF fellows must maintain a valid medical insurance policy in their name (minimum ₹ 1 Lakh coverage) throughout their tenure, as no medical reimbursement is admissible.

Monthly fellowship emoluments:

  • Ph.D. Degree Holders: ₹ 67,000/- per month plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per Institute rules.
  • Thesis Submitted (Awaiting Degree): ₹ 35,000/- per month plus HRA (restored to ₹ 67,000/- upon submission of provisional degree).
  • Medical & Leave: OPD medical facility and leave entitlements as applicable to PG students.

Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship of ₹ 67,000/- per month + HRA for Ph.D. degree holders (or ₹ 35,000/- per month + HRA for thesis-submitted candidates awaiting degree) initially for 1 year, extendable for another year based on performance.
