Work Culture & Environment

Office/fieldwork balance, duties, organizational environment.

Chargemen in the Indian Coast Guard oversee technical maintenance, overhaul, and dockyard repairs of complex shipboard electrical, mechanical, marine, and electronic systems across Coast Guard vessels, interceptor boats, and offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). The role requires supervising technical teams of civilian technicians, conducting sea-worthiness readiness inspections, diagnosing machinery defects, managing hull integrity, and providing hands-on engineering support to Coast Guard engineering officers. Postings at remote naval/coast guard stations (such as Diglipur in North Andaman, Okha on Gujarat's coastal border, or New Mangalore) involve coastal operational tempo, dockyard shifts, and high technical responsibility in maritime defence readiness.

Posting & Transfer Policy

Initial posting criteria, zone preferences, transfer liability.

Selected candidates are appointed to initial vacancies at Okha (Gujarat), Diglipur (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), or New Mangalore (Karnataka). However, as Central Civilian Defence employees, they have All India Service Liability (AISL) and are liable to be transferred across any Coast Guard Regional Headquarters, District Headquarters, or field station across mainland India and island territories (A&N and Lakshadweep).

Career & Promotion Ladder

Promotion timeline, seniority ladder, pay grade scaling.

As a Group 'B' Non-Gazetted technical post in Level-6 (₹35,400 - ₹1,12,400/-), Chargemen enter a structured defence civilian promotion ladder: eligible for promotion to Senior Chargeman / Technical Superintendent (Level-7, ₹44,900 - ₹1,42,400/-) upon completing 5 years of regular service, followed by gazetted civilian officer ranks (Assistant Director / Junior Works Manager) and periodic financial upgrades under the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme.
